LeRoi Moore by the time of his death had become my favorite pop/rock/alternative saxophone player. As a soloist, LeRoi, along with Carter’s playing made many fans and me, as a ‘hack’ of a wannabe drummer, to be very careful not to get the snare drum before he made his statement on beat two or beat four. By the time of his death in August 2008 from pop complications when an ATV vehicle accident occurred, I was so used to playing along to Crash especially that I felt: What an underrated player. We’ll never LeRoi’s his tone again – than k the Lord for the digital recordings we have of him – and the most amazing *analogue* recordings some of us have – those of us who like the band in 1994 – when they were just moving to RCA. (and we haven’t).
Especially towards the end of his career with his Dave Matthews band or he became infused and adept at inventing and jumping of of others’ in the band, short punchy riffs. The last such song he wrote like this was called why I am watches on Dave Matthews band’s latest album called GrooGrux King.
The Dave Matthews band family as they have become is too familiar with death. A car accident, a murder, an ATV accident.
The time that Dave Matthews heard LeRoi solo “Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” which many players do but not many can do it over the top, surreal soothing and sublime – and that’s when Dave decided he wanted him for the Band.
The Dave Matthews Band has many legal recordings of Grey street which I published for mostly about 100 beats per minute. In family business owned factories as Horizon Windows in Paramus, NJ, US I can call up the song in my head when I feel relaxed. When somebody else doesn’t know how to do this I feel an almost *unfair advantage* — especially when music is on in the background.
